A $225 million, 333 MW facility has been proposed in the commune of Buin, in the metropolitan region of Santiago.

333 MW, four-hour, 1,480 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage project (BESS) planned for the commune of Buin in the province of Maipo, has been admitted for processing by the Environmental Assessment Service (SEA) of Chile.

The BESS Metropolitana project, with an estimated value of $225 million according to the documentation submitted to the SEA, would have a 27-year life, including 12 months for construction and the same period for its closure.

Work on the site, in the metropolitan region of Santiago, is expected to start on July 1, 2026. The proposed 6.5-hectare, private property site would feature the BESS, a new 220/33 kV substation, and a 220 kV, low-tension transmission line.

The standalone BESS would comprise modular energy storage equipment, inverters, and electricity transformation centers to enable energy flow to and from the batteries at a 33 kV voltage.
